Reading is an important skill, but understanding what is being read is just as important. Reading comprehension helps children connect with stories, remember information, and build confidence as readers.
The good news is that improving comprehension does not have to feel stressful or complicated. Small everyday habits can make a big difference.
Ask Questions While Reading
Pause during the story and ask simple questions like:
“What do you think will happen next?”
“Who is your favorite character?”
“Why do you think they made that choice?”
This helps children think more deeply about the story and stay engaged.
Let Children Retell the Story
After reading, encourage children to explain the story in their own words. They can talk about:
the beginning
favorite parts
important events
how the story ended
Retelling helps improve memory and understanding.
Read Together
Reading out loud together allows children to hear expression, pronunciation, and storytelling flow. Taking turns reading can also build confidence and keep children interested.
Connect Stories to Real Life
Help children make connections between books and their everyday lives.
For example:
“Have you ever felt like that character?”
“What would you do in that situation?”
These conversations help children understand stories on a deeper level.
Make Reading Fun
Children learn best when reading feels enjoyable. Add activities like:
drawing scenes from the story
acting out characters
themed snacks or crafts
using funny voices
Interactive reading keeps children excited and engaged.
Encourage Daily Reading
Even 10–15 minutes of reading each day can help strengthen comprehension skills over time. Consistency is more important than long reading sessions.
At Mash Potatoes Publishing, we believe reading should inspire imagination, creativity, and confidence. With encouragement and fun learning experiences, children can continue growing into strong and excited readers.
